About three years ago we began working on a divination deck which can soon be found on this web site. During the preparation phase of that project, Inara, our resident belly dance goddess, came up with the concept for what was to be our first deck; the Tarot of the Bellydancers.
What makes this deck unique is that it's done entirely with live models shot against a blue screen, then morphed into their various settings. While we're aware that there are several other photographic decks out there, none have the look we achieved, or the dedication to the true heart of the tarot we've worked so hard to put into this deck.
We not only tried to make a beautiful deck, but one that could serve as anyone's primary deck. To that end we used symbology from primarily the Waite and the Marseilles decks. We didn't try to reinvent the tarot here or tailor a deck to a specific set of individuals, as much has been done in recent years in that direction. Instead we went for a feel of comfort, so that anyone who's used the tarot before would be happy using this one in it's place. We feel that the realism and beauty of this deck will make attractive to the first time user as well as the collector. The cards are really large as well. ( four by six inches) If you'd like to learn more about why we chose particular symbology or the changes we chose to make. Click here
The first section of our booklet for Tarot of the Bellydancers is now online, click to the right or below to get it.
We're also going to release a version of this deck in the summer of 2006 that includes these cards plus a suit to represent spirit, which will bring the deck total to 100 cards. (note: we'll continue to offer the standard deck of 78 for you folks who prefer a more tradition look) .
For those of you who are not belly dancers, the symbols for the four suits/elements are as follows:
Zills (finger cymbals) = Pentacles
Swords = Swords
Canes = Wands
Drums = Cups
These were chosen as they are items commonly used by belly dancers.
